The house of Tarleton Combs

This is the house where Tarleton Combs and Leni Leota Stewart lived when their children were small. Tarleton Combs built the house himself. Leni Leota Stewart died here and is buried on the hill to the left of the house. Located in downtown Tyner, Ky., Jackson County. Nellie Frances Combs Case was born in Owsley County, and was only 5 years old when her mother died (Leni) and they left this house. The children stayed with different sisters of their mother in Owsley Co. until their father relocated in Berea, Ky. Nelie Frances lived with Aunt Frances Thomas. Called Aunt Frankie. Aunt Bethel also lived there. This is how the house looked in the fall of 1997.

The house of Tarleton Combs

This is the house Tarleton Combs, built for his family in Berea, Kentucky. After his wife died at Tyner. He left his children at the homes of their Aunts and Uncles, their Mothers' sisters, in Owsley County. After he was able to prepare a home for them he went back to the mountains and brought them to Berea. He married a Mrs. Jennie Howard, who also had 5 children and built this house for them. After he took the baby brother, Robert to Berea, he died, and Tarleton took the baby back to Tyner, by horse and buggy, to bury him beside his mother, in the Reynolds Cemetery. The house has been refurbished and is now the office of the CAP Agency. This picture was taken in the fall of 1997. The house is located at the foot of Center Street. Berea KY.

Above you will see pictured Tyner School. The School house no longer stands. Tarleton Combs used to teach school here. Some of his students were his own nieces and nephews. He got his education from Berea College and wasn't a school teacher very long. He latter became a farmer.
